The Responsible Use of AI in Evaluation project is developing an AES policy position and guidance on the ethical, culturally responsive and effective use of AI in evaluation. The project aims to support evaluators to use AI responsibly while maintaining rigour, ethical standards and confidence in the evaluation process and product.
Project team formed: February 2026
Project journey
Late 2025 — The AES Policy Committee identified the responsible use of AI in evaluation as an emerging priority, recognising growing use of generative AI and the need for guidance for evaluators.
2026 —The project team established its approach to developing the policy position, including an evidence review and a plan for member consultation.
Current status
The project team is building the evidence base, considering contemporary guidance and issues including governance, security, Indigenous data sovereignty, transparency, ethics and cultural safety and is current planning for member consultation.
Next steps
AES members will be invited to contribute through an initial survey, followed by targeted focus groups and interviews. Further engagement will focus particularly on First Nations perspectives and the experiences of evaluators using AI. Findings from the evidence review and consultation will inform development of the AES policy position and guidance, with the project working towards completion in March 2027.
