Event description:

How can we ensure that the things that improve people's lives are recognised and valued when making decisions about programs, policies and investments?

This seminar explores why wellbeing matters in decision-making and how evidence about changes in people's lives can be incorporated into Social Cost Benefit Analysis. It will introduce wellbeing valuation as a method for assigning monetary values to social benefits, helping make outcomes that are often difficult to quantify more visible and comparable.

Through a practical case study, participants will see how the Australian Social Value Bank (ASVB) makes this approach more accessible and proportionate for smaller programs, and how the resulting evidence can support better-informed decisions.

Presenter details:

Min Seto is the Executive Officer of Alliance Social Enterprises, the not-for-profit social enterprise behind the Australian Social Value Bank (ASVB), where she leads its ongoing development and delivery.
With a background in community services management and over nine years of experience in social impact measurement, Min works with government, community and corporate organisations to better understand, measure and communicate the social value of their activities.
Her work focuses on making wellbeing valuation and Social Cost Benefit Analysis more accessible and practical, helping organisations understand the broader benefits of their programs and use this evidence to inform decisions about funding, investment and program design.
Min is passionate about ensuring that improvements in people's wellbeing are recognised and valued alongside financial and economic considerations, so that decisions are better informed by what matters to people and communities.

If this seminar is recorded, it will be available on the member portal for AES members only.

 QLD SIMNA Interactive Session 7

Date and time: Thursday 29 October 4.00pm -5.30pm AEDT
Topic: Discussing social impact measurement and evaluation at the organisational level
Location: online via zoom, details will be shared just prior to the event
Presenter(s): Johana Susanto | The Salvation Army, Camilla Pandolfini | Redfern Legal Centre, Jenna McDonald | For-Purpose Evaluation/SIMNA, Laura Baker | Acil Allen

NGOs, cooperatives and social enterprises often measure the impact of individual programs to understand outcomes for the people they support and meet funder reporting requirements. But how can they bring this evidence together to understand their impact across the organisation?
Understanding impact across an organisation often raises questions: What should be measured consistently? What needs to remain locally relevant? And how can findings support decisions and improvements, rather than just reporting?

This joint AES-SIMNA seminar will explore how organisations connect program-level measurement with a broader picture of their impact. Through case studies and a panel discussion, speakers will share their approaches, practical challenges and lessons learned along the way.

Presenters details:

Leading The Salvation Army’s research team for the past 14 years, Johana Susanto has helped build evidence-informed approaches that strengthen mission impact and improve outcomes for communities. She brings extensive expertise in research, evaluation, and social and health issues, and is passionate about turning evidence, frontline insights, and lived experience into practical action that improves services, informs advocacy, and strengthens support for Australians experiencing disadvantage.

Camilla Pandolfini is the CEO of Redfern Legal Centre (RLC). RLC is a not-for-profit community legal centre in Redfern, NSW, with a local and statewide focus that provides free legal information, advice, representation and legal education to people experiencing disadvantage, and drives policy and advocacy for positive change. Camilla has almost twenty years' experience in the social justice legal sector in Victoria, the United Kingdom and New South Wales. Camilla is passionate about social justice and the role of community legal centres in creating change in collaboration with people and communities experiencing disadvantage. She has significant experience in achieving systemic change, strategic and impact planning and contribution to organisational sustainability and growth.

Prior to joining For-Purpose Evaluations, Jenna worked in several service delivery roles within disability and family violence organisations. This hands-on experience gives her a unique understanding of the need for a sensitive, accessible and trauma-informed approach to evaluation and outcomes measurement. Jenna has a Master in Public Policy specialising in social research from the University of Sydney and is a member of the local organising committee for Social Impact Measurement Network Australia (SIMNA). Jenna specialises in mixed methods research and has strong skills in interpreting complex datasets to draw meaningful insights to inform decision-making.

Laura plays a leading role in ACIL Allen’s evaluation practice. She has a passion for solving complex policy problems and finding opportunities to translate insights into tangible advice. Her work focuses on evaluation of government, research and industry programs, funding models and policy in health, innovation, and the environment. Prior to joining ACIL Allen, Laura gained 5 years’ experience working in a multi-disciplinary, translational medical research hub. She is a NSW Committee member for the Australian Evaluation Society.

Event description:

The aes26 conference in Darwin explored the theme ‘Making space, valuing place’, inviting us to consider the diverse perspectives, places and contexts that shape how evaluation is understood, practised and used. Across the program, the conference created space for different disciplines, methodologies and worldviews, honoured Indigenous values, and brought together voices from Australia, the Asia–Pacific region and beyond.

The NT evaluation community turned out in force, with unprecedented participation from people across the Territory. Attendees included those who identify as evaluators and many others whose work intersects with evaluation, including policymakers, data analysts, program leaders, economists, managers and commissioners of evaluation.

This interactive seminar is a conversation rather than a formal presentation. Conference and pre-conference workshop participants are invited to share their key insights, while those who could not attend can hear what resonated with others. With so many parallel sessions and workshops, it is also an opportunity for attendees to discover ideas and perspectives they may have missed.

We invite NT presenters to briefly introduce their session and share what it explored.

We also invite NT attendees to share a key takeaway—perhaps something new they learned, an idea that challenged them, a question they are still considering, or something they have applied or would like to apply in their work.

We welcome reflections from across the NT’s diverse evaluation community, whether you are an emerging or experienced practitioner or work in an evaluation-adjacent field.

People from other states and territories are welcome to listen in.

We also invite NT AES individual and institutional members, along with aes26 attendees, to register for our face-to-face networking events which will be taking place in Darwin and Alice Springs in November.

This seminar will not be recorded.
