This is a free seminar organised by the Aotearoa New Zealand Regional Network Committee of the AES. Our seminar series provides an opportunity for you to meet with AES members and others in the evaluation community and to share and learn from the experiences of fellow evaluators.

Seminar overview

In this flexible seminar session, Dr. Jane Rovins will discuss her filed-based experience in various settings including international development and DDR. The seminar will provoke insights from various trends, lessons and challenges in diverse contexts and will touch on themes such as:

  • pearls of wisdom for emerging evaluators interested in entering international development
  • context specific issues related to culture and gender ‘mainstreaming’
  • evaluator burnout

Presenter's background

For over 25 years through 50+ countries Dr. Rovins has developed an expertise in international disaster risk management and response; training; and policy development. She is Principal Advisor Research for Fire and Emergency New Zealand and a Senior Lecturer at Massey University (New Zealand).

Her recent work includes being CEO of Disaster Reduction & Resilience Solutions, Ltd (Hong Kong) developing the pandemic planning for indigenous social service organizations, ASEAN Standards and Certification for Experts in Disaster Management (ASCEND) Framework, the National Disaster Response Framework (NDRF) for Indonesia, among others. She was the founding Executive Director of the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) Programme and spent several years working with and for the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency.

She has received distinguished awards including induction into the International Women in Emergency Management Hall of Fame; Massey University Research Medal – Team 2019; the Innolec Lectureship in Disaster Risk Reduction from the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University (Czech Republic), among others. Dr. Rovins is a leader in several prominent organizations including co-chairing the WMO Working Group on Societal and Economic Research Applications and Vice-President of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) – Oceania council.
