Workshop Overview

Many programs and initiatives include an engagement component or use engagement as their primary means for creating change. When this is the case it is important that evaluation pays attention to the engagement processes. This training will demonstrate the unique dilemmas of evaluating engagement and help participants explore solutions for these dilemmas.

While the logic of evaluating engagement is entirely consistent with that of evaluation more broadly, there are some unique challenges, including:

  • the context-specific and qualitative nature of engagement
  • engagement approaches cover a wide range of activities and need a wide range of evaluation approaches
  • the influence of dominant personalities, power structures and relationships
  • the challenges around evaluating relationship capital that may extend beyond funded timeframes.

To address these challenges we offer practical steps, as well as a set of principles, for evaluating engagement processes.

Workshop Content

After examining the idea of ‘engagement’ and the particular challenges it presents for evaluation, participants will be introduced to a set of guidelines for, and an approach to, evaluating engagement.

Workshop Objectives

Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of:

  • the basics of engagement evaluation
  • a set of practical guidelines for planning an evaluation of an engagement process.

This workshop aligns with competencies in the AES Evaluator’s Professional Learning Competency Framework. The identified domains are:

  • Domain 1 – Evaluative attitude and professional practice
  • Domain 4 – Research methods and systematic inquiry
  • Domain 7 – Evaluation Activities

About the facilitator

Lee-Anne, Principal Consultant at Clear Horizon Consulting, excels in supporting clients to bring disciplined thinking to their monitoring and evaluation (M&E) challenges, and has a wide reputation for her highly engaging and interactive approach to training.

Lee-Anne works with all levels of government, as well as with non-government and industry organisations, to plan for and implement M&E at the organisation, strategy, program and project levels. Her role is increasingly as a ‘trusted adviser’ to Clear Horizon’s clients, supporting their own effective program design and M&E planning and implementation, through mentoring, action-learning, and in-situ training or facilitated workshops.

With tertiary qualifications in both economics and natural resource management, Lee-Anne has had a varied work history, both nationally and internationally. Lee-Anne joined Clear Horizon in 2011 and, along with Jess Dart and Carina Calzoni, is a Director and part-owner of the business.
