This is a free event organised by the Canberra Regional Network Committee of the AES. Our regular events provides an opportunity for you to meet with AES members and others in the evaluation community and to share and learn from the experiences of fellow evaluators.

The reading group explores the lives and works of the ‘wise women of evaluation’. So far we have read Eleanor Chelimsky, Carol Weiss, and Patricia Rogers. In pre-COVID times we met at Canberra’s iconic White Eagle Polish Club, where our discussions were enhanced by perogi and various libations. This will be the first time we meet online via Zoom.

Event Overview

In our fourth meeting of the reading group, we will explore the reflections of Zenda Ofir that evaluation is a beautiful practice. Our departure point will be a short blog post where she proposes:

My response is that evaluation as profession and practice is intrinsically beautiful—but how we practice it, frequently not…Evaluation engages some of our deepest, most valued capabilities as humans. Evaluation is an art and a science.” (Ofir, 2017). Click here for link.

Ofir proposes that recognising that evaluation is beautiful encourages our strivings to realise the promise of evaluation.

Please join us for a lively discussion in a collegial atmosphere, where we will consider questions such as:

  • What does it mean for evaluators to cultivate a life of the mind for practice—as proposed by Zenda Ofir and Thomas Schwandt?
  • How does thinking of evaluation as a beautiful practice change the way you value what you have done, or change the way you will do things in the future?
