Evaluation Journal of Australasia, Volume 25, Issue 3, September 2025

Editorial

This issue of the Evaluation Journal of Australasia explores how reality is represented in evaluation practice, featuring a range of thought-provoking contributions. Christopher Banks examines the symbolic limitations of program logics, questioning how they can oversimplify complex realities. Kathleen Clapham and colleagues present an Aboriginal-led study that uses a Western program logic to evaluate a culturally based educational program, highlighting tensions between Indigenous methodologies and systemic expectations. Matt Healey and co-authors apply systems methods to map the lived realities underlying lawyers’ wellbeing, revealing interconnected causes of poor wellbeing in the legal profession. The evaluator perspective features a conversation between Anthea Rutter and AES Fellow Theo Nabben, who reflects on shifts in evaluation practice toward local expertise and the inclusion of environmental and social realities. Finally, Ming Hwa Ting reviews Evaluation Time: A Practical Guide for Evaluation by Gail Vallance Barrington and Beverley Triana-Tremain, drawing attention to the book’s discussion of ontological perspectives and stakeholder tensions.
