Half Day Workshop - Joint event with IPPA WA

Topic: Assessing the Impact of Research and Evaluation Studies - What, Why, When and How?
Presenter: Sandra Nutley
6 September 2011, 9am-12.30pm

Overview
This workshop addresses the issues faced by many organisations and groups that are now being asked to provide an account of the benefits and impact of their research and evaluation activities. From public and charitable research funders, research and evaluation sections in government agencies, through to university research centres and groups, and evaluation organisations, they all face substantial challenges in providing robust and representative accounts of their impact.

Course Content
This half day workshop is offered at an intermediate to advanced level. The workshop will discuss the challenges experienced when providing robust and representative accounts of the impact of program evaluations, participants will consider what, why, when and how research impact assessment is or can be undertaken.

Sandra Nutley
Sandra is Professor of Public Management at the University of Edinburgh, where she is also Director of the Research Unit for Research Utilisation. In addition to her academic role, she is a non-executive director of the Social Work Inspection Agency Board (Scotland). Sandra has an international reputation for her work on research use and evidence informed policy and practice, and she is a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences on these issues. She has written many papers and her research on this topic is captured in her recent book on Using Evidence. Prior to joining academia, Sandra worked in local government in the UK and since then she has been seconded to work with several public sector organisations, including the Scottish Government.
