The Australasian Evaluation Society is a professional organisation
for people involved in evaluation.
In the ACT we have informal meetings during the year. We also run seminars and workshops on a range of
evaluation topics. The chapter has decided to try to make the Hot Issues Breakfasts a recurrent event, usually on the first Thursday of each month. Any suggestions for future topics, or expressions of interest to chair them, will be welcome. Chairs get a free breakfast! Please pass suggestions to Graham Smith at or to the chair of the Canberra Chapter, Susan Garner

Do evaluations ever influence change?
Thursday 13 October, 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
Mint@Forrest Café,
Minter-Ellison Building, National Circuit and Sydney Avenue, Forrest

Chair: Tulip Penney
Brief description of the topic:
As evaluators, we not only assess the merit and worth of policies or programs, but also strive to see the impact of our evaluations. A major impact of an evaluation is its role as an intervention that leads to change. Put simply, evaluators are interested in the benefits of their evaluations; in particular how it influences change (e.g. program improvement, program continuation). The evaluation literature provides a plethora of theories relating to the use of evaluations. More recently theorists have shifted the focus from evaluation use to evaluation influence. Evaluation influence refers to the subtle and indirect impacts of evaluations over a period of time. Tulip is looking at the influence of evaluations in the Australian Government, and would like to stimulate a discussion on this topic. Specifically, the session will unpack some of the key theories on influence and explore how they resonate with evaluation practice in the ACT.
Brief description about me:
Tulip Penney is the Unit Head of Publishing Services at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. She is interested in evaluation theory and practice and is currently a PhD candidate, conducting research on evaluation. She has over twenty years’ experience in policy, research and evaluation primarily in the areas of Indigenous health and education; social justice; and disability.

21 - 24 November 2011
Outcome Mapping Workshop
Presenter: Terry Smutlyo
Overview
The workshop will provide participants with a detailed exposure of Outcome Mapping theory, concepts and tools, in addition to insight into how the methodology has been applied in a variety of contexts. Participants will also apply Outcome Mapping to their own work through use of a peer assist clinic.
Terry Smutylo specialises in methods that empower stakeholders, promote learning, and focus on outcomes in project, program, and strategic evaluations. He has led teams that developed several internationally recognised methodologies, including organisational self-assessment and outcome mapping. He has conducted evaluations, provided training, and facilitated organisational development for development organisations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Workshop Content
The three and a half-day training will provide participants with an overview of the methodology and then take participants through its different steps. This content will be reinforced by a set of exercises which will also facilitate discussion of the application, and pros and cons of using the methodology. An indicative structure can be found on the flyer attached below.
Workshop fees (incl GST)
